The demand for external managed security assistance and expertise continued to grow last year. Ovum's latest research figures show that the percentage of IT security budgets spent on consulting (13.8%) and outsourced and managed security services (16.6%) exceeded 30%. Whereas the percentage spent directly on software, hardware, and staffing dropped below 70% for the first time. Most of this fall in spending is accounted for in staffing, where the lack of availability was a major factor.
The problem of finding, recruiting, and retaining skilled security staff continues to be a significant issue. It is having a knock-on effect on organizational abilities to deal with complex cybersecurity threats, making it more likely that organizations will turn to managed security service providers in greater numbers to address the skills shortfall.
