President Barack Obama and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) recognize October as National Cybersecurity Awareness Month (NCSAM). Now in its 13th year, this month is focused on increasing awareness about the importance of cybersecurity as well as personal and enterprise cyber hygiene. Each week in October is dedicated to a cybersecurity theme, the first of which is Every Day Steps Towards Online Safety. As cybersecurity professionals, security encompasses a large part of our everyday lives. Regardless of your job function or experience level, there are simple steps everyone can take to maintain a safer digital presence, both professionally and personally. Whether it be at home with your family, traveling abroad, at school, or in the office, the following tips will ensure personal security but also preserve security at the enterprise level.

- Don't click on unknown links or open unknown attachments.
- Update your computer and mobile software regularly.
- Use multi-factor authentication for enhanced security.
- Cover internal laptop cameras.
- Don't do any shopping or banking on public WiFi networks.
- Educate employees on protecting identity online.
- Use unique passwords for different online accounts.
- Update your anti-virus software daily.
- Change the manufacturer's default passwords on all of your software.
- Regularly download vendor security "patches" for all of your software.
