CNBC: Robert Herjavec on the TikTok Deal and Security Concerns
September 24, 2020
Herjavec Group CEO & Founder Robert Herjavec joined CNBC’s “Squawk Alley” this week to discuss the security concerns and questionable access to analytics and algorithms surrounding TikTok’s deal with Oracle and Walmart.
Robert advocates for separating the political concerns from that of security. From a security standpoint, there is a benefit of having data and algorithms reside in the United States. As we've seen with the GDPR privacy regulation in the UK, data residency is a critical component to ensuring the security and privacy of citizens are upheld.
From a political perspective, “Social media is the new commercial TV — this is how we influence America," says Herjavec, "So the concern of the Chinese influencing Americans doesn’t go away, but the data residency is an important step forward.”
