Identity and Access Management (IAM) is one of the biggest areas of focus in cybersecurity due to the high risk of insider threats in enterprises. An insider threat, whether malicious or accidental, is when company data is compromised as a result of a damaging action taken by a current or ex-employee.
In our report, Cybersecurity Conversations For The C-Suite in 2017, we discussed the increasing importance of establishing proper access controls through IAM protocols. In fact, according to the Ponemon Institute, the total average cost of insider incidents is approximately $4.3 million per year.
Identity and Access Management helps enterprises by establishing the correct access for each employee based on the relationship with the employer using PIM (privileged ID management) and PAM (privileged access management) solutions, which try to mitigate the risks associated with insider threats by locking credentials in a vault.
For example, if an employee wants access to a particular account, the network administrator can restrict that access by using a PIM/PAM solution to provide the employee with one-time use unique login credentials. Using advanced PAM technology, network administrators can not only track the identity of the exact individual who used each login credentials, but also record and force-disconnect a session if needed.
